Before / After

Six shots, six problems of geometry

Before and after, shot by shot. Every path is drawn to scale on the court plan: where it bounces, where it rebounds, where it leaves the court, and where you have to come out from.

01
Court plan: the ball travels the length of the court, bounces on the floor near the back left, rebounds off the glass and comes out in a V, where the player is waiting for it.

Out of the glass

The glass returns the angle you give it. Wait for the ball to drop, turn sideways before it rebounds, and come out with your body already pointing where you want to play it.

02
Court plan: from the back left, the ball climbs with topspin, crosses the court in a wide arc and dies against the fence in the far right corner.

Topspin lob down the fence

A high, closed topspin that dies in the corner. Close the face of the racket and follow through upwards: the spin does the rest of the work.

03
Court plan: the player smashes from the back left. The ball arcs across, bounces in the far court, curves on to a second bounce at the very back and leaves over the right side fence.

The “por 3” smash

The smash that ends the point outside the court. Take it high and in front, and look for the deep bounce: if it clears the fence cleanly, nobody is bringing it back.

04
Court plan: the player is at the net. The ball arrives straight from the right and is blocked into the far left corner, with no bounce and no wall.

Volley

At the net you do not hit, you block. Firm racket, contact point ahead of your front foot, and your weight moving into the ball.

05
Court plan: the opponent’s lob drops into the left mid-court. The player attacks it with a bandeja and drives it cross-court into the far right corner.

Bandeja and víbora

The shot that holds the net. The bandeja buys you time; the víbora wins you the point. The difference is the contact height and the wrist.

06
Court plan: the serve is struck from behind the service line and crosses diagonally. Three targets are marked, all deep and tight to the far service line: down the T, into the body, and wide to the side glass.

Serve

Three places to put it: down the T, into the body, or wide to the glass. All three deep and tight to the line. Bounce it, hit below the waist and move up: if the serve does not let you take the net, it is not doing its job.

    Professional

About Mario

My technique was not good. I had to build it.

I come from football, not tennis. When I started competing I realised I did not have the technical base the others had, and I had to build it from scratch, shot by shot. That is exactly why I know where people get stuck: I was stuck in the same place.
